Roofer JayJay Murray recently took to Facebook to tell the story of a homeless man who helped JayJay and his colleagues out on a job. That story has gone viral, and for all the right reasons, too.
JayJay and his colleagues at Empire UPVC & Roofing Specialists in Waltham Cross met the homeless man, named John, who lived on a bench in London. They brought him a cup of tea in the morning, and offered him the chance to come and help them on their job the next day.
John was the first on the site. JayJay remarked that he’d never seen someone so eager to work.
At lunch, the workers bought John a meal at Burger King. At 1:00 pm he said that a payment of £15 ($20) would be sufficient for his time, but the workers pulled together a £70 ($90) payment, instead. Then, they asked him if he’d like to come back for more work.
At the end of the day, John thanked the roofers for the opportunity to work by saying, “Thanks brothers it’s the most love I’ve ever had.”
So far, JayJay’s post detailing the experience has received over 21,000 likes and 5,000 shares.
It’s a poignant reminder of the fact that many people are homeless due to circumstances that they couldn’t control. Many homeless people want to work, but finding a job when you don’t have a home or an address can be extra challenging. Sometimes they need someone to take a chance on them to help them get back on their feet.
