Here’s The Best Way To Clean A Glass Stovetop

Having a glass stovetop is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can free up counter space in a small kitchen. On the other hand, it’s extremely difficult to clean. Dirt, grime and burned food can easily build up and become a rock-hard crust that refuses to budge.

On top of that, abrasive cleaning sprays and scrubbers will damage the glass stovetop surface, which you definitely don’t want. Here’s the easiest way to clean all the crud off using things you probably already have in your kitchen.

You’ll need:

  • A spray bottle
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • A towel or washcloth
  • A razor scraper

First, wipe the (completely cool!) stove down with a damp sponge to remove any crumbs. Then, spray it with a fine layer of vinegar—this is where you’ll use the spray bottle, for convenience. This will cut through grease and begin to help soften the baked-on gunk.

Next, cover any dirty spots with baking soda. It doesn’t have to be a ton, but any dirt should be covered completely. Wet the baking soda again with the vinegar and let sit for at least 15 minutes.

Note: You can either leave the stovetop uncovered with the baking soda and vinegar mixture on it, or you can cover it with a towel dampened in water.

After about 15 minutes have passed, use the towel or washcloth to scrub and wipe away the debris on the stove. The baking soda is a good, natural abrasive that won’t scratch the glass stovetop surface, so you don’t have to worry.

If you can’t get everything off, this is where the razor scraper comes in handy. While the stove is still damp, you can scrape off any stubborn spots very carefully. Work on one small spot at a time and move the razor blade as smoothly as possible to avoid scratching the surface.

If the above natural method doesn’t suit your fancy, we recommend trying this spray that you can get at Home Depot. It’s specifically designed for cleaning ceramic cook tops. Our marketing guru, Christina, highly recommends it, but advises to,

“Make sure you let your stove top cool completely before using. If you try to spray on the cleaner while the stove is still warm, it will dry out and not work. It’s most effective when allowed to sit on the stovetop for 5-10 minutes, then you can simply wipe away the grime with a paper towel.”
