Color-Changing Tattoos Could Monitor Blood Sugar, pH and Sodium, Scientists Say

Do you think tattoos look cool, but you never could muster up the courage to get one? Well if you suffer from diabetes or any other health issue that requires monitoring your blood sugar or other heath stats, this could be your opportunity to get one!

While it may sound weird, researchers at MIT and Harvard are exploring a colorful new approach that involves bio-sensing tattoos. These innovative tattoos contain chemicals that can sense blood sugar levels, pH and sodium.

How does this work exactly? According to CBS News, when one’s blood sugar rises, the glucose-sensing ink changes from blue to brown. Same goes for a salt level increase, where the sodium-sensing ink turns into a more vibrant green under UV light. For shifts in alkaline levels, a pH sensor changes from purple to pink.
