Whenever we talk about aromatherapy, we start visualizing a picture of a shadowy atmosphere in a closed chamber, scented candles, potpourri and a comforting feel as you enter that space. Actually aromatherapy is an alternative treatment with an aim of unifying the physical, mental and spiritual set up of an individual with the help of essential oils. The term “aromatherapy” was coined by the French chemist and perfumer Rene Maurice Gattefosse in his book “Gattefosse’s Aromatherapy” which deals with the medicinal application of herbs for treating a wide range of physical ailments.

Synergy is the key element of aromatherapy

The most important factor of aromatherapy treatment is a synergy of essential oils with some carrier oil that can give almost an endless range of therapeutic effects. It is always advisable not to use an essential oil directly on your affected area, but combine it with some career oil as the essential oils may have some allergic reaction to your skin. Also, using essential oils can give you severe side effects if you apply them without mixing with any carrier oil. However, if you choose aromatherapy for treating any chronic ailment, consult a trained aroma-therapist to avoid any toxic reaction if you combine in wrong proportions.
