5-year-old daughter of first responders dies from coronavirus after complaining of headache

A five-year-old girl from Michigan who complained of a headache one month ago has died from coronavirus, as per reports.

Skylar Hebert, from Detroit, passed away on Sunday after having spent two weeks on a ventilator.

The girl tested positive for COVID-19 in March. Sadly, she went on to develop a rare form of meningitis and brain swelling.

As per reports, mom LaVondria said Skylar’s condition had failed to improve – doctors told her she might be brain dead.

“We basically just knew she wasn’t coming back to us,’ said LaVondria, Detroit News reports.

The daughter of two Detroit first responders, it’s believed Skylar is the first child infected with coronavirus to die in Michigan. Her mother and father said they didn’t know how Skylar became infected with COVID-19 and that she wasn’t suffering from any underlying health issues.

According to the Daily Mail, Skylar went into hospital on April 3 and developed meningoencephalitis – a rare complication of the virus. Her brain tissue then swelled and caused a lesion on her frontal lobe.

‘The loss of a child, at any time, under any circumstances, is a tragedy,” said a spokesman for Beaumont Health.

“We are heartbroken that COVID-19 has taken the life of a child. We extend our deepest sympathy to Skylar’s family and all others who have lost a loved one to this virus.”

Skylar’s initial symptoms didn’t immediately signal that she had coronavirus, as per mom LaVondria.

“She had been crying all night and saying the headache would not go away,” she said.

“We called the doctor back, and they told us that it takes the medication 48 hours to kick in and to give it some time, but because she was crying so bad, I told my husband we needed to take her to emergency because I just didn’t know.”

Skylar tested positive for the virus at Beaumont Royal Oak, but she was sent home a day later. Within hours, however, she was back in the hospital.

“We went back to emergency at the Beaumont Hospital’s Farmington campus because I noticed my husband was coughing and having shortness of breath,” Herbert said.

“Me and Skylar waited in the car, but out of nowhere, Skylar began complaining about her head hurting again and then she just threw up.”

Skylar would go on to have a seizure and was admitted to paediatric intensive care.

Rest in peace, Skylar! I’m so sorry for her family’s loss. Lord, shine your light upon them and show them the way.
