When 81-year-old Evelyn Williams was escorted out on stage at Ireland’s Got Talent, the judges were wondering what this great-grandma was doing there. What could she be up to?
The Irish widow with her curly hair and sparkly eyes clutched a microphone and appeared to be quite comfortable on stage. That’s because she has spent her entire life performing before packed audiences.
But never live on TV. When Evelyn opened her mouth and began singing Stephen Sondheim’s emotionally charged song “Send in the Clowns,” the audience and judges were stunned.
Not only did the crowd love her performance, so did the judges who all gave her a standing ovation at which time Evelyn bursts into tears. In fact, judge Michelle Visage hit the Golden Buzzer and confetti rained down on the woman, sending her straight to the live semi-finals.
The judge joined her on stage to reassure her that it wasn’t a bomb going off, which Evelyn first thought was happening. The judge then explained how “Send in the Clowns” was written to be performed by a person who had experienced the highs and lows of life, making it perfect for Evelyn to perform.
Evelyn had been accompanied to the audition by her granddaughter who also sings and encouraged Evelyn to try out. Her best friend also was in the audience, too.
They could not believe the response to Evelyn’s incredible performance, even though they personally knew what a spectacularly talented lady she is. They could see how captivated the audience was with their beloved Evelyn’s audition.
Being a widow of seven years, Evelyn knew the lows that life would bring and how the song was appropriate for her. Her daughter also is in Saudi Arabia and she rarely sees her.
But with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Evelyn is surrounded by people who love her. Now, she’s become a household name with this spectacular and emotionally draining performance on Ireland’s Got Talent.
