Landlord waives rent for a month, then surprises mom-of-four tenant by buying her groceries

The coronavirus pandemic has meant that nearly all of us are feeling the sting in some shape or form.

For people living pay-check to pay-check, or those who don’t have much in the way of savings, not being able to work everyday poses a serious problem. This is especially pertinent where paying rent is concerned.

Fortunately, some landlords around the country understand the unique situation that we’re in. As a result, a few compassionate souls have waived a month’s rent for tenants in a bid to try and help them stay afloat.

Nathan Nichols is one such landlord. He not only waived rent for April but also encouraged other people in his position to do the same.

“COVID19 is going to cause serious financial hardship for service and hourly workers around the country,” he posted to Facebook on March 13.

“I own a two unit in South Portland and all of my tenants are in this category. Because I have the good fortune of being able to afford it and the privilege of being in the owner class, I just let them know I would not be collecting rent in April.”

“I ask any other landlords out there to take a serious look at your own situation and consider giving your tenants some rent relief as well.”

Of course, it’s not possible for every landlord in the world to do so, and we do understand that circumstances vary from person to person. And yet there remain a select few who have gone even further than Nathan.

One truly special man, known only as Alan, not only suspended rent payments but also spent his own money to make sure one of his struggling tenants had food for the week.

Heartwarming gesture

Mom-of-four Christina Marie, of Saginaw, Michigan, was happily surprised when she heard Alan wouldn’t be collecting rent.

She posted on April 6: “SOOO My landlord Alan called me earlier and told me not to worry about rent this month and we will worry about it later. [I] said okay!

“Than he asked me if we had food I told him how I had 3 packs of meat left and needed to go this week and he told me okay be safe. Than I get a text saying go to your front porch please !!! And I see this I couldn’t tell you how I feel right now,” she wrote, along with a photo of the groceries he had bought for her.

“[F]or him to do this for my family my heart is so touched,” Christina wrote. “GOD BLESS YOU.”

Indeed! What a fantastic show of compassion and kindness. We tip our hats to all the kind landlords out there going above and beyond for their tenants.
