My best friend

I had you at sixteen and I thought it was the end of the world for me.

I dropped out of school and had to stay two years at home to be able to care for you.

I became a single mother at the age of sixteen, and I was tagged as a disgrace because I couldn’t abort you.

My dad disowned me and I had to start living with your father; life wasn’t rosy, but we were willing to create a better life for you.

Your dad was just twenty then and was still in college; he had to do two jobs to be able to cater for the both of us.

I never regretted having you or choosing you over my family.

You filled my life, became my best friend and source of joy.

Most times, people mistake us for sisters and we can’t but laugh at their ridiculous comments.

You made me happy once again and each moment with you brings smiles to my face.

At first, I wasn’t ready to be a mother, but watching you grow I didn’t have to force anything; I grew to love you.

I never treated you like a little bunny; I treated you like my younger self and the bond we have together is something that rarely happens.

We grew to love and respect each day and most times people wonder who’s the mom between the both of us.

You know all my fears, so do I know yours and we help each other conquer them.

There’s no cure for this illness, and many people get it when they make these mistakes while swimming!
