Newlyweds donate food from their canceled reception to local shelter amid pandemic

The pandemic has caused the cancellation and postponement of so many events, it’s nearly impossible to list them all.

From televised events to ticketed shows to family gatherings and celebrations, nothing has been safe.

Melanie and Tyler Tapajna, a couple from Ohio, planned to get married in front of 150 people, but when it became obvious that having that many people come together would be unwise, they decided to change their plans.

“It was really either have the big wedding or donate the food,” Melanie told CNN. “We were actually kind of excited I think more about donating the food than being stressed during the wedding.”

While the couple still exchanged vows, they did so in a small backyard ceremony.

And when they were finished, instead of celebrating with more than the 100 friends and family as originally planned, they headed over to a local women and children’s shelter.

The couple, still dressed in their tuxedo and wedding gown, served food that would have gone to their wedding guests to those at Laura’s Home.

“Something like that had never occurred before,” Rich Trickel, CEO of The City Mission, which runs Laura’s Home, a shelter that provides women and their children a place to stay and services.

“It was really unbelievable especially when you think of many of our clients, the women and kids that are in our building, possibly have never been at a wedding like that before.”

Because of the couple’s generous donation, 135 women and children were able to eat.

Thank you to Melanie and Tyler for donating their food to Laura’s Home. What an incredibly wonderful gesture. May you live a long and blessed life together!
