World War II veteran celebrates 108th birthday with parade from the Freedom Riders

It’s fair to say Paul Beckman has been and done most of all that a human being can hope to do in a single lifetime.

The World War II veteran celebrated his 108th birthday on Saturday and was treated to a special drive-thru parade from the Freedom Riders in Kearney, Nebraska.

After hearing that Beckman was to celebrate another huge milestone, the Freedom Riders knew they simply had to bring the party to him. Given the ongoing restrictions regarding COVID-19, the result was both safe and enjoyable for all involved.

Of the personal parade, Beckman, who was born all the way back on August 20, 1912, said:

“I really appreciate the fact that I have folks right here that take an interest because when you get as old as I am you’ll find that it’s pretty lonely, it’s very very lonely.”

Beckman has seen plenty in his time, including World War I and World War II, as well as two worldwide pandemics.

These days he naturally has a bit more trouble getting around, but he admitted that he’ll fondly remember Saturday with a smile on his face.

Wow, that was enough to bring a tear to my eye. Thank you, Paul, for your service. Here’s to wishing him many happy returns.
